Big impact, great rewards: The value of volunteering

Volunteers are the lifeblood of Veramendi. Whether helping plan a seasonal festival, contributing your time at a neighborhood clean-up, or simply supporting a neighbor, each act strengthens our beloved community. The value of volunteering is deeper than it might seem — and recent research confirms just how powerful it is.

Building a stronger, more vibrant community

Between September 2022 and September 2023, about 28.3 % of U.S. adults volunteered formally through organizations — and over 54 % helped neighbors in informal ways (running errands, lending tools, etc.).
Mixed-methods study published in 2025 analyzed “Health Mentors” in communities, exploring volunteer motivations and experiences — and found that volunteers frequently reported strengthened social connections, enhanced sense of purpose, and mental health benefits.
In a 2025 review of community-based volunteering, residents said there was an increase in physical activity, emotional well-being, and mental resilience as direct outcomes of volunteer roles.
These findings underline that volunteering doesn’t just help others — it helps tie the community together.

Healthier you

Volunteering keeps you active, sharp, and connected. Giving your time and energy to others builds purpose and meaning into everyday life. Research shows that helping others can lower blood pressure, ease stress, and reduce the risk of anxiety, depression, and chronic illness. In short — doing good is good for you.
There are countless ways to get involved right here in the community you call home.

Assist a neighbor

Small acts go a long way — bring up a neighbor’s trash bins, help with yard work, or drop off a meal to someone in need. These gestures foster trust, care, and community.

Help local first organizations first

Extra hands make a big difference at local nonprofits like Communities in Schools, Comal County Crisis Center, New Braunfels Community Foundations, United Way of Comal County, Hope Hospice, the 100 Club — to name just a few. You can lend your time through tutoring, after-school mentoring, donation drives, or event support. However you help, it all adds up to a stronger community.

Join or lead resident committees & clubs

Whether the focus is mahjong, bridge, or wellness — resident-led committees are where momentum is born. You can join an existing group or start something new (“Veramendi parks and pools” or “garden ambassadors,” etc.).

Event volunteering

Our signature events — seasonal festivals, youth events, and monthly gatherings — are powered by volunteer contributions. Roles range from planning and logistics to on-the-ground support (greeting, set up, activity facilitation). Even a few hours of your time can make the difference between a good event and a great one.
